  7.     The new command of the Bundeswehr Ost, the remains of the
  8. former East German army, has inherited a logistical nightmare:
  9. getting rid of the Soviet army. According to U.S. military
  10. attaches, the Soviets have more than a million tons of
  11. munitions stockpiled on German soil, not counting the array of
  12. tanks, guns, planes and rocket launchers to deliver them. In
  13. addition, the 380,000 Soviet troops still stationed in East
  14. Germany occupy some 2,000 military "objects," which means
  15. everything from barracks to hospitals to airfields. If the
  16. Soviets meet the current four-year timetable for withdrawal,
  17. they will have to dispose of about 500 of those "objects"
  18. annually, more than one a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a
  19. year. The economic dislocations -- not to mention the munitions
  20. tonnage -- could be explosive.
